The town of Denbigh is located about 12 miles south of Rhyl in the county of Clwyd and its station was situated on the old LNWR Vale of Clwyd line, which commenced approximately 1 mile to the west of Rhyl Station at Foryd Junction, from where it diverged off the main LNWR Chester to Holyhead route, and headed south until meeting the Great Western Railway at Corwen. It was joined by a line from Chester, via Mold, to the north of Denbigh.
The Vale of Clwyd line was closed to passengers in sections:- Ruthin to Corwen in February 1953; Rhyl to Denbigh in September 1955 and Denbigh to Ruthin, together with Denbigh to Chester, in April 1962. Freight services didn't fair much better, the Corwen to Ruthin section, plus Denbigh to Rhydymyn (on the Chester Line) also closing in April 1962; Ruthin to Denbigh in March 1965 and Denbigh to Rhyl in January 1968.
The above is fact, what follows is totally fictitious, for the Denbigh before you uses the above information for setting purposes only and is not meant to resemble either these old lines or any towns within the general area. In the description that follows, all names used are applied in a fictional context.
The Denbigh before you is set in the late 1980s/early 1990s and is at the end of a 7½ mile branch which diverges off the main North Wales Line about 1 mile to the west of Rhyl, at Denbigh Junction, where it heads south towards Central North Wales. The only intermediate station on the branch, at Bryn Elwyn, is reached after 3¼ miles. To the north of Denbigh Station are Denbigh No1 and No2 Tunnels, each 450 yards in length. From No 1 tunnel (double bore) emerges the line from Rhyl and from No 2 tunnel the 2¾ mile single line branch from Newydd.
Denbigh and Newydd are served by trains to/from Rhyl and Chester, but all Newydd services have to reverse at Denbigh in order to gain access to the Newydd Branch. However, this operation is now normally restricted to rush hours and the freight services to Newydd MOD Establishment. The main daytime service to/from Newydd generally operates as a shuttle between Denbigh and Newydd only.
The line is now entirely single track, but prior to rationalisation (late 1970s) was double track between Denbigh Junction and Denbigh, with a goods yard and engine shed at Denbigh. The goods yard as such has gone, it is now the interchange for buses, but the old engine shed still survives, albeit as the bus garage for the local bus operator Crosville Cymru.
